Correct Funding Model Essential for Delivering Water Supply

Chambers Ireland has today (16/01/12) welcomed the announcement of a six-week public consultation on the fundamental reforms of the water sector that the Government must introduce.

Seán Murphy, Chambers Ireland Deputy Chief Executive said, “Chambers Ireland have long called for the introduction of domestic water charges as a means of containing costs and ensuring adequate future funding for critical investment in our water infrastructure. The establishment of a suitable funding regime can deliver significant cost savings for all stakeholders, optimise investment and secure Ireland’s reputation as a clean, green economy, which is essential to attracting foreign investment and supporting our industry and tourism market.”

“The introduction of domestic water charges will help to ensure that water providers have a sustainable and predictable source of income to fund infrastructure investments, to target and reduce the high levels of unaccounted for water (ufw) in the Irish water system and to drive consumer awareness of conservation. Chambers Ireland looks forward to contributing to the consultation process,” Murphy concluded.
